Last summer during one of my frequent book shopping sprees at Chapters, I went a little nuts. I love hard cover books and I especially love a beautiful cover. It always draws me in and despite having a light e-reader I just enjoy the feel of an actual book. When I read the description I knew it was something I would love. I had bought a rather hefty stack of new reading material that day and schlepped it home. I put off reading The Night Circus because I was saving it for last. I tend to do that, I get a feeling about a good book and I just want to hold out as long as I can because I know for sure I’ll be sad when it’s finished. My close friend Dave started to read it and he urged me to hurry up and start. He wanted me to create a cake for his birthday (this upcoming September), still I put it off. It was like saving the best candy in the box of chocolates. Several months later I joined a book club and we were going to read The Night Circus at my suggestion. I was so anxious to get started!

I wanted to practice a cake themed for The Night Circus so I would be prepared for carving and shaping in September for Daves cake. His would be multi-tiered but there are only 8 people in my book club so I needed to scale back. While reading I fell in love with the concept of a night circus and often caught myself daydreaming about how this could translate to film. (Summit has purchased the movie rights and I will be crossing my fingers that Tim Burton gets his hands into this one!) Erin Morgenstern is also an artist, creative and talented, she weaves a wonderful story that can be read by all ages. It’s absolutely enchanting and so descriptive I enjoyed getting lost into the ideas of how to translate it into cake. If you have watched any interviews that Erin does she says something that really struck me as a cake designer, “I write what I cannot paint and I paint what I cannot write.” For me the same holds true when it comes to cake. I cake what I cannot possibly draw. My sketches are not that fabulous but somehow I can get it onto the cake and looking like I envisioned. I am definitely passing my copy onto my oldest daughter and I’m going to give her a project of designing her own cake as a side project.

I wanted to include so much into the cake but I was strapped for time. I had two other large cakes to work on this weekend and so I didn’t start this endeavour until this afternoon after I’d finished volunteering at my daughters school. With only a few hours to go, I decided to just do what I could. Three hours later I arrived at a tent and some small details.

It was great practice for me to see what I want to do for my official Night Circus cake later this year. I know for sure I want a more pronounced peak, and definitely some more details. Like the ring of fire, a bowler hat, a random glove. Maybe a tree with modelling chocolate and a young Bailey sitting in side? All I can say is the next one will be BIG, like my love for my bestie Dave. *Muwah*

I love birds, and I’ve been dying to use these cutters, so I knew I had to include the birds somewhere on the cake. Time was short so the cage was not completed, but overall I was happy with their delicate silhouette.

I also love masquerade and wanted to use my cutter for the masks as well. I painted one white with glitter (edible) and the other I attempted to paint with black edible glitter but it was futile, so it became red!

I made a small pinch rose and a red scarf if honour of Friedrick Thiessen (the clock maker) and also head reveur. I would have liked to make an intricate clock, alas time was not on our side. (oh I’m witty this evening!) While reading the book I think I even broached my husband on the idea of creating a real night circus. I think he kindly nodded and smiled and promptly told me it was time for bed… (I think this was my second evening up until 3am reading). It’s so enthralling you just can’t put it down.

The stars shooting out of the top are gumpaste covered in edible disco dust and I wanted them to represent the opening ceremony as well as fireworks and the re-occurring theme of night as displayed on the cake board. (FYI The cake board took almost as long as the cake two hours of cutting out stars, painting them, and then replacing – yowsa!)

And the inside? Rich Buttermilk Dark Chocolate with a fluffy salted caramel swiss meringue buttercream. Yum! The book and the cake were thoroughly enjoyed by all. I think we are all anxious to see this come to life as a film, so if you are out there Summit Entertainment….get going!
